Echo Summit Highway 50 Cabins and Real Estate, South Lake Tahoe, CA
Echo Summit is the highest point in this portion of Highway 50 at 7387 feet above sea level.
For many years, the summit area was a magnet for skiers. The Echo Summit Ski Area was a popular destination. The Echo Summit Ski Area closed in the 1980s. However, many skiers still trudged on foot to the top of the slope to practice their craft. After closure, the ski lifts were purchased by the Iron Mountain Ski Area on Highway 88 at the entrance to the Mormon Emigrant Trail. Not long afterward Iron Mountain went out of business. A few miles west of Echo Summit is the Sierra-at-Tahoe Ski Resort. Sierra-at-Tahoe, sister of the Northstar-at-Tahoe ski area on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe, offers long runs for skiers of all skill levels. The resort, which was once called Sierra Ski Ranch, has one run that covers three miles. In 1859, a waystation was established here. It was called Phillips Station.
Also at Echo Summit is the trailhead for the cross country route to Kirkwood Meadows to the South.
Nearby Echo Lake is a small lake in the Eldorado National Forest. A narrow point in the lake divides it into Upper and Lower Echo Lake. Echo Lake Village Resort is near the south shore. Echo Peak at 8,895 feet overlooks the lake.

Just east of Echo Summit on Highway 50, the road offers the first tantalizing views of the south shore of Lake Tahoe as it snakes along the edge of a steep slope. The roadway was carved out of this location from solid granite.
